“The barriers we create for ourselves are our worst enemies.
They destroy us from the inside and we alone to overcome them. When we speak of barriers, it is associated with the notions of blocking, hindrance, limits. This notion is rarely associated with that of finding solutions.A barrier is also a constraint and for me, constraints have always been the source of a motor, of a quest. We can remain a witness of the world around us, but you can also choose to be an actor – active. It’s a question of point of view: At home, the glass is always half full … “
The impetus of the project relates to the expression of resilience or more precisely how constraints can be perceived as the trigger for a positive movement: an overcoming, a solution, a diversion. From both an acrobatic and a philosophical point of view, the brakes carry with them the seeds of action and can also engender a spirit of rebellion. As an acrobat, Wilmer Marquez constantly transcends the limits of his body. It exceeds daily pain, aches, injuries, wear and tear. It is therefore the limits and his will to overcome them, to bypass them that inspires the acrobatic movement. In this project, the inspiration is twofold. It comes both from the physical research around going beyond limits and the very strong choreographic inspiration brought by the musical universe of singer Lhasa de Sela.
The point of convergence of these two sources are the major themes treated by the words of Lhasa, an artist anchored in the contemporary world and their bodily translation: borders, immigration, the path (ement), the journey… she sings in three languages.
The barrier as a motivation, a motor because it must be defeated. With this theme, the body becomes the perfect tool to work around a writing that is located in the evocation of the universe, of situations, more than in a precise narration.
The BARRIERES project is the seventh creation of the El Nucleo company and the third show carried by artist Wilmer Marquez.
“I never forget where I’m from.
I use this daily to keep moving forward without thinking of barriers as brakes but rather as constraints that give me different opportunities, new doors, new worlds to discover, to visit… paths to explore. I think humans are living below their possibilities. We forget the power we each have, allowing ourselves to be overcome by the vastness of the world around us. Yes, it is true that we are tiny in an immensity. But we are part of it.
At the origin of my project, I wanted an imposing scenography, cutting through the scenic space in the form of a wire fence. The economic consequences and calendar shifts linked to covid 19 had direct impacts on this project for which I ultimately decided to focus on the bodies. “
